Biomass burning-agriculture coupling in the Orinoco savannas—Particulate matter emission scenarios

چکیده

The Colombian Orinoco savannas (254 thousand km 2 ), also known as Orinoquia or Llanos, have been steadily transformed into pastures for more than a century, and since the 1990s, commodity crop intensified production. cropland area expanded at 12% yr ?1 during 2007–2018 period (65% larger in 1996–2007). Yet, we estimate that cattle ranching occupied ten times (34%) (3.2%) 2018. rest of Orinoquia, including indigenous reservations protected areas, was semi-natural state, although exposed to seasonal fire. three main crops, oil palm, corn, rice (72% sown 2017), accounted 68% expansion, with permanent crops expanding two faster (18% ) short-cycle crops. An extrapolation trends indicates cultivated will double by 2040 (reaching 20 palm dominant crop. Satellite measurements show 7% burned every year 1997–2016 period, yet large spatial interannual variations (±26%), significant decrease (up ?4% ). Up 40% (BA) variability linked irregular rainfall drought. areas fractional BA were those least cover. A model developed describe this coupling, along other effects, successfully explained most Orinoquia’s ( r = 0.93). fitted each hectare reduced 0.17 ha. This predicts combination expansion independent decline lead fourfold reduction referred 1997. production generated 3 Gg PM10 (particulate matter <10 µm) 2016, mostly from while biomass burning 57 Gg, i.e., 95% combined emissions. These are expected halve 2017–2040 despite an 83% increase emissions, total emissions remain controlled burning. Such pollution burden should tremendous positive impacts on public health Andes.

A Comparison of Particulate Matter from Biomass-Burning Rural and Non-Biomass-Burning Urban Households in Northeastern China

BACKGROUND Biomass fuel is the primary source of domestic fuel in much of rural China. Previous studies have not characterized particle exposure through time-activity diaries or personal monitoring in mainland China. OBJECTIVES In this study we characterized indoor and personal particle exposure in six households in northeastern China (three urban, three rural) and explored differences by loc...

Emission factors from residential combustion appliances burning Portuguese biomass fuels.

Smoke from residential wood burning has been identified as a major contributor to air pollution, motivating detailed emission measurements under controlled conditions. A series of experiments were performed to compare the emission levels from two types of wood-stoves to those of fireplaces. Eight types of biomass were burned in the laboratory: wood from seven species of trees grown in the Portu...

Particulate matter originating from biomass burning and respiratory.

OBJECTIVE To analyze the effects of exposure to fine particulate matter from burning on hospital admissions due to respiratory diseases in children and the elderly. METHODS This is an ecological time series study that took place in the city of Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, in Brazil's Amazon Region, in 2005. Information on the daily levels of fine particulate matter PM2.5 was made available by the Bra...

Indoor particulate concentration during biomass burning in central India

Indoor air particulate (PM) exposure is several folds more dangerous than  outdoor air  owing to burning of different materials. Burning biomass emits toxic fumes that are found to be associated with  numerous health problems  such as respiratory diseases, etc. In our study area,  approximately 80% of the population of Chhattisgarh state, central India use biomass  such as wood, and cow dung as...

Particulate Matter Emission Factors for Biomass Combustion

Emission factor is a relative measure and can be used to estimate emissions from multiple sources of air pollution. For this reason, data from literature on particulate matter emission factors from different types of biomass were evaluated in this paper. Initially, the main sources of particles were described, as well as relevant concepts associated with particle measurements. In addition, arti...
